Our Work

Our founders have more than 10 years of experience working and partnering with governmental organizations, non-governmental organizations, ministries, foundations, private companies and universities. In the course of serving these various organizations, they see the importance and value of working in the intersection between practical and academic mindset to fill the unbridged space between practitioners, communities, and policy makers.

The high public demand for various regulatory, educational and strategic management outputs motivates us to serve upstream needs such as increasing human resource capacity and product development, to downstream such as network expansion, program curation and planning as well as offline and online exhibitions with international standards.

Songke & Rea, Manggarai Barat, Flores

The West Manggarai Province Songke and Pandanus weaving craftspeople are experiencing unprecedented changes brought in by the tourism industry. The rapid sprouting of tourism has brought in demand that can potentially shift local craft communities’ pace of existing patterns of production - distribution and consumption. And this mismatched pace of supply and demand can also potentially bring in substitute industrialized craft products, eliminating opportunities for the West Manggarai craftspeople.

The Songke&Rea project focuses on two woven crafts of kain tenun Songke (handwoven cotton fabric) and anyaman rea (handmade pandan weaving products) which have historically gone hand in hand. The process of making the Songke from hand picked cotton, used woven pandan baskets as storage for the raw cotton fiber. While during the crafts’ product use, the kain tenun songke is used together with topi Rea (woven pandan hats). This historic pairing creates a rich narrative signifying the importance of how both crafts should be sustained and further developed together.

This project aims to address the local craft potential’s needs to respond to the incoming changes. Our focus is to preserve and perpetuate local craft tradition and values by strategically focusing on key aspects : local, gender balanced leadership empowerment to establish a sustainable income based on local crafts potential.

This project is made possible through fundings by the British Council Digital Craft Toolkit Training of Trainers Grant and the Universitas Negeri Jakarta International Community Service Grant
